As a professional recruiter I screen thousands of resume per week. That is not an exaggeration, I seriously view on average 200 resumes per job requisition and have between 20-30 jobs on my plate at any given time. Most are decent, not great but decent, a few really stand out as great and then there are quite a few that are down right awful. It always amazes me when I see a really bad resume. With the wealth of information that is available on the Internet in regards to resume writing tips, there is no excuse for poor resume these days. To add to the library of resume writing information, I want to share the 3 main things I look for when screening a resume.
- Relevance – How relevant is your experience to the position’s job description. Every job description that I have ever seen has a requirements section. This may sound harsh but if you do not meet the requirements then do not apply. You are just wasting everyone’s time (including your own). If you do match the requirements, make sure that your resume clearly displays that. This may mean that you have to make some changes and customize your resume for each position you are applying for. The best resumes will actually mirror what is asked for in the job description.
- Results – If you are just writing about your responsibilities then you are only telling half the story. Should I assume that you are mediocre and have not accomplished anything significant in your career. If that is not the case then tell me that in your resume. Including your accomplishments and recognition is an absolute must. Companies are not looking to hire warm bodies these days. They want people who can demonstrate a history of success and could bring immediate results to their next position
- Appearance - How your resume looks is as important as the content. Are you using a modern format or does it look like your resume is from the 1970’s? Are there typos or grammatical errors? The job market is way to tight right now for you to just through your resume together.
If you read this far then chances are you are job hunting and looking to improve your resume.
